He’s worked as a writer and archival researcher at Network Entertainment Inc., a company in Vancouver, BC, Canada dedicated to producing factual documentary projects for major networks and streaming services like Showtime, Paramount, Epix/MGM, YouTube Premium and Quibi. João pitched and developed characters and storylines for Quibi’s Beauty, a multi-part series executive produced by Tyra Banks. He additionally assisted the show’s showrunner Annetta Marion and segment producer Kate Green with planning for archival budget and content curation. Also at Network Entertainment, he worked as an archival researcher for Epix/MGM’s Punk, a multiple award-winning docuseries executive produced by Iggy Pop and John Varvatos exploring the “music, the fashion, the art and the DIY attitude of a subculture of self-described misfits and outcasts” — 2020 Leo Award for Best Documentary Series, Best Direction, Picture Editing and Sound. He shared content clearance responsibilities with the show’s Archival Producer, Bianca Cervantes, negotiating exclusive content across the series. He also contributed questions for interviews with A-list cast. In addition to his work in documentary and entertainment, João is also a journalist. He has worked for the CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, producing local and national stories for online, radio and television. He worked as a project manager, writer and video producer with long-time CBS 60 Minutes producer and Emmy-Award winning journalist Peter Klein at the Global Reporting Centre (GRC) — an independent and non-profit media organization dedicated to global investigative journalism. João was part of the team behind the GRC’s multi-award-winning Strangers at Home, a multimedia crowd-sourced documentary on xenophobia exploring the nuances behind extremism and its ripple effects across Europe, shown from the perspectives of storytellers based in different European countries. João also contributed to Global News Television in Canada as an associate producer for the flagship show Global National during the Rio 2016 Olympics. He additionally worked on a multimedia investigative piece about the threat of asbestos to public health for The Tyee, an independent online Canadian news magazine. During his time at the University of British Columbia’s School of Journalism as a master of journalism student, João won the best essay award for a piece he wrote about the 150th anniversary of Canada. João grew up swimming in Caribbean-like beaches on the northeast coast of Brazil, listening to bossa nova and finding inspiration in his country’s fascinating culture and people. |
